Police in Busoga are hunting for unknown machete-wielding thugs who brutally attacked and killed the Deputy Headteacher of Kaliro Church of Uganda Primary School and her son as they were returning from the school garden.

This incident happened on August 1, 2024, at around 7:00 p.m. near the Kaliro district headquarters along the Kaliro Nawaikoke road. The deceased have been identified as Grace Kalayi and Ishu Boya Mutaka.

A preliminary police report indicates that Kalayi died on the spot, while Mutaka was declared on arrival at Iganga General Hospital due to the severe cuts and injuries he sustained during the attack.

According to Robert Katerere, the Headteacher of Kaliro Church of Uganda Primary School, he last saw the deceased at around 5:00 pm after meeting with the primary seven candidates; however, he suspects the deceased could have been killed by criminal gangs in Kaliro Town Council that have been targeting civil servants.

’’We are living in fear, especially us, the civil servants; because of late we are attacked and killed by these thugs with no mercy at all, as though they have a personal grudge against us,’’ Katerere revealed.

He further urged the police to tighten security in the area due to the increased attacks.

During an interview on August 2, 2024, the Busoga North Regional police spokesperson, ASP Micahel Kasadha, confirmed the incident and stated that a manhunt for the culprits is underway, adding that once they are apprehended, they will be charged with murder.

’’Our preliminary investigations show that Kalayi died on the spot because of the deep and severe injuries she sustained during the attack, but her son Mutaka died on arrival at the hospital due to the loss of a lot of blood and the deep wounds he too sustained. However, these culprits will soon be caught,’’ Kasadha said.

“Our priority is to ensure swift apprehension of the suspects responsible for this reprehensible act, and we are going to do everything possible to bring those accountable to justice,” he added.

The police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to aid in the investigation. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and fear, particularly among civil servants who feel targeted by criminal gangs in the area.
