Loice Chekwemoi made headlines on Thursday night August 29, 2024, as she clinched a silver medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the World Athletics U-20 Championships held in Lima, Peru. Chekwemoi achieved a personal best time of 9:18.84.
The race was competitive, with Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew taking gold and breaking the championship record with an impressive time of 9:12.71. Kenya’s Diana Chepkemoi secured the bronze medal, finishing with a time of 9:29.84.
The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) took to their official X handle to congratulate Chekwemoi on her remarkable achievement.
“Congratulations to Loice Chekwemoi for winning a Silver medal with a personal best in the women’s 3000m steeplechase in the time of 9:18.84 as Nancy Chepkwurui finished 5th with a PB of 9:47.47 during the world athletics U20 Championships in the city of Lima, Peru,” UAF posted.
This achievement follows a successful outing earlier in the week, where Kenneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop both earned bronze medals in their respective 5000m races.
So far, Uganda has secured three medals in Lima: one silver and two bronze, highlighting the nation’s growing prowess in athletics. The championships have attracted over 1,700 athletes and 130 teams from around the world, making it a significant event in the athletics calendar.
