Christine Bukenya Ssendawula, the Kyankwanzi Woman Member of Parliament (MP), has revealed that women in Kyankwanzi district are going to start up a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation or Society (SACCO) that is going to provide credit to women so that they can help alleviate themselves out of poverty.

Bukenya revealed this on April 18, 2024, during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations in Ntwetwe Town Council, Kyankwanzi District.

According to Bukenya, the women are going to start up ’’Maama Bank’’ to provide credit to women in the district without asking for collateral.

Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba, who delivered a speech on behalf of of First Lady and Education and Sports Minister Janet Kataha Museveni, urged the women leaders and those of influence to uplift their counterparts and the vulnerable by forming a SACCO to promote economic empowerment and ensure no woman is left out.

“This way, we create a sense of sisterhood that is centred on bringing everyone to a place where we can all benefit from the prevailing socio-economic transformation,” Kataha highlighted.

Nabakooba also delivered the first lady’s support to the SACCO of Ugx. 50 million as a start-up for their project.

Bukenya further thanked Mrs. Kataha for being kind-hearted through the financial support she is going to provide to the ‘Maama Bank’ SACCO. Bukenya also committed to financially supporting the SACCO.

“I am going to ensure that I top up on what the first lady has given us to make UGx. 100 million, and we start borrowing this money to empower our women economically,” Ms. Bukenya said.

She urged women to get PDM money and start-up commercial agriculture to produce food for both home consumption and surplus for sale.

Kyankwanzi has 21 registered groups of women throughout the district who have benefited from the Uganda Women Empowerment Programme (UWEP), PDM, and Emyooga.
