Police in Kisoro district have rescued one Nyiransenga Christine, 38, after an angry mob in Tarama village in Muramba sub-county, Kisoro district, attacked and set ablaze her home.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, stated that the mob also set ablaze the house of one Regina, accusing both of them of practicing witchcraft.

According to the police, they were severely assaulted during the incident, and if it weren’t for the police, they would have been killed.

“Police in Kisoro have arrested 20 suspects for setting ablaze people’s houses and assaulting them on allegations of practicing witchcraft,” Elly Maate revealed.

ASP Maate urged people to desist from taking the law into their own hands and instead seek legal methods of justice.

“I want to call on people to desist from acts of lawlessness; if they know they have evidence against them of doing such acts, let them use legal methods so that the law can take action but not themselves being the complainers and punishing people,” he said.

In 2021, a man in Opiro village, Omoro Sub County, was burned alive over allegations of practicing witchcraft. The mob burned down his shrine and residence, accusing him of causing mysterious accidents around the area.
