A fight broke out during the Kampala City Council Authority meeting in the city hall following a disagreement between the councilors from the Forum of Democratic Change (FDC) and the National Unity Platform on the report of waste management in Kampala.

The meeting held on September 17, 2024, at the KCCA city hall in Kampala was meant for Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to present a report on waste management in Kampala but did not show up.

Drama ensued when NUP councilors demanded an apology from John Mary Sebawufu, who was representing the City Executive Committee but declined to apologize. He had insisted that the report was available, but he was not allowed to present it.

“I will not apologize because we have the report ready. The delay came from the technical team that delayed submitting their report. Instead of receiving the report that we had, the speaker demanded that we should apologize for the delay or else the council will be adjourned until the apology is made,” he stated.

Zahara Luyirika, the speaker of KCCA, accused the CEC of failing to present a report on waste management in Kampala, including the recent tragedy that happened at Kiteezi Landfill, but was met with intimidation from people said to be hired by the CEC to cause commotion in city hall.

“All we want is a report for the Kampala waste management, but instead of presenting the report, goons were sent to beat us up in the city hall. The CEC was given a week to present the report, but they failed, so we demand an apology from them or else the council will be adjourned till the apology is presented,” Zahara echoed.

The fight between the two parties has been visible from way back, as the NUP councilors and the speaker do not respect the Lord Mayor, while the FDC Katonga team blames the NUP councilors for being chaotic and unruly during meetings.
