Government Extends Amnesty to Kayunga Ex-Rebels

A total of 15 former rebels in Kayunga district have received amnesty from the government of Uganda.

While handing amnesty certificates to the former rebel combatants of the 1972-1979 civil wars on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, at Busaana Sub County headquarters, Amina Munuulo, the Amnesty Commission regional coordinator, said the initiative aims to build peace and reconciliation to help former rebels return to civilian life.

Munuulo also revealed that the commission is working towards supporting former rebels to return to civilian life.

She added that they are also equipping the former combatants with vocational and business skills to help them in their integration.

The beneficiaries include Nigo Idi, Tigatola Wilberforce, Abure Luka, Wing Simon, Wafula George, Atibuni Justus, Makika Emmanuel, Iddi Levi, Moga Charles, Owino John, Alemi Minsuseera, Siira Ayunwa, Okuni Waga, Dumba Joseph, and Bayiga. Elly all residents of Busaana subcountry, Kayunga.

David Mubyaliwo, the LCIII Chairperson of Busaana Sub County, urged the combatants to engage in various government programs to create wealth among themselves.

The Amnesty Commission was established by the Amnesty Act of 2000 with the mandate to reintegrate former rebels back into their communities.
