Security operations have been significantly intensified for this year’s Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja, following terror alerts issued by the United Kingdom and the USA. Despite the warnings, festival organizers and attendees have remained determined to proceed with the event.

Uganda, renowned for its robust security measures, has mobilized all its security agencies to ensure the safety of festival-goers from around the globe who have gathered for this annual celebration.

Darius Nandida, the Jinja Regional Commander of the Central Region (RCC), emphasized that security measures have been tightened. Collaborative efforts between various security agencies, including the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Special Forces Command (SFC), Uganda Police Force (UPF), the Bureau of Counterterrorism and International Security Organization (ISO), are being employed to effectively counter any potential security threats.

“Our equipment and vigilant strategies are in place to prevent terrorists from achieving their malicious objectives. All security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Ugandans and foreign nationals,” said Nandida during an interview with our reporter.

Meanwhile, the US Mission in Uganda, through its social media account, advised American citizens against attending the Nyege Nyege festival and urged them to remain vigilant in tourist-frequented areas.

“Due to security concerns, we advise U.S. citizens not to attend the Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja from September 9-12, 2023. U.S. citizens should also refer to our recent Security Alert issued on November 6th. Take necessary precautions and remain alert in locations commonly visited by tourists,” the embassy stated.

This exhilarating event spans three interconnected sites situated along the Nile River: the Jinja Golf Course, the Source of the Nile, and the Jinja Showground. The festival attracts a diverse range of music enthusiasts, showcasing both local and international talent.

Despite the heightened security measures and warnings, the Nyege Nyege festival continues to captivate attendees, who remain confident in the country’s efforts to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
