Health authorities in Bukomansimbi district are currently investigating a potential outbreak of a strange disease that claimed the life of one male adult at Mulago Referral Hospital in Masaka.

This comes after a male patient was taken to Butenga Health Centre IV in a critical condition with rashes all over; however, on arrival, he was sent to Mulago Referral Hospital in Masaka for better treatment, where he was declared dead.

This incident, which happened in the last weeks of July 2024, and the deceased’s unknown illness, characterized by symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, rashes, and general body weakness, have raised concerns among local residents and district leaders in Bukomansimbi.

During an interview on August 3, 2024, the Bukomansimbi District Health Officer, Dr. Alfred Kato Tumusiime, confirmed the incident and revealed that the deceased had symptoms similar to severe malaria. However, further investigations are underway to establish the exact cause and implement appropriate control measures.

Dr. Tumusiime added that in January 2024, there were some cases that were reported, and the locals were losing their loved ones to the mysterious condition; however, some of them were receiving treatment at Butenga Health Centre IV and Villa Maria Hospital. The affected villages then were Kyankoko, Misenyi, Kabandiko, Baakijjulula, Gayaza, and Kabangereza in Kitanda Sub County, Bukomansimbi district.

’’The situation in Bukomansimbi highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential disease outbreaks since there are confirmed cases of the monkey pox threat in neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and Rwanda,’’ Dr. Tumusiime noted.

He further revealed that monkey pox is characterized by malaria-like symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, paleness, bloody urine, big rashes, and general body weakness, and urged the locals to be vigilant, alert the health authorities, and avoid touching the person with the said symptoms because this disease spreads easily.

As the investigation into the Bukomansimbi outbreak continues, it is crucial for health authorities to collaborate with local communities, provide accurate information, and ensure that necessary resources are available to manage and contain any potential disease threats. The well-being of Uganda’s children and the overall public health security of the nation depend on a proactive and coordinated response.
