Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja visited Soni Village in Bulambuli District on November 29, 2024, to express sympathy and support to families affected by a deadly landslide. The landslide happened after heavy rainfall lasting 10 hours, resulting in 20 fatalities and many people still missing. As of Friday evening, more than 100 residents were unaccounted for.
During her visit, Prime Minister Nabbanja announced that the government would provide financial assistance. Each family that lost a loved one will receive UGX 5 million, while those injured will be given UGX 1 million for medical treatment, courtesy of President Kaguta Museveni.
Nabbanja was joined by the State Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Relief, Lillian Aber, local MPs, and other officials to assess the situation on the ground.
“We spent the entire day in Bulambuli District to deliver condolences to the families of the deceased and assess the damage caused by the landslide,” she said.
The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the rescue teams, which included the Uganda People’s Defence Force, Uganda Police Force, and local volunteers. “These teams have worked tirelessly to recover bodies and help find missing persons, despite the difficult conditions of the roads,” she added.
Nabbanja also encouraged survivors living in risky areas to move to safer locations. “We urge all survivors and those in vulnerable areas to relocate immediately to Bunambutye for safety. In the long term, the government will allocate two acres of land per family and 17 million for each homestead to help build houses,” she stated.
The government is committed to supporting those affected and ensuring their safety in the aftermath of this tragedy.
