The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health has devised new plans on the implementation measures against malaria by introducing a malaria vaccine.
Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Health Minister revealed that Government will be starting the implementation of the malaria vaccine at end of 2023.
This implementation will mainly apply for children, and in this case, it will be able to bring the burden of malaria down which will save the Government billions of money (US$120 million) spent on treatment as well as protecting its citizens.
According to the WHO 2020 report, 30,000 people have died of malaria in Uganda.
The Ministry of Health has made efforts to sensitize the public about malaria.
Currently, over 30 percent of the total outpatient visits and 20 percent of all hospital admissions are malaria related cases.
A total of 20 million cases and a death toll of 30,900 people in 2020 alone including over 70,000 children under five years has been recorded.
Efforts are being made to pursue the Malaria Control Bill with an establishment of a fund known as the Presidential Malaria Trust Fund Uganda whose objective will be to secure predictable and sustainable means of procuring goods and services for malaria prevention and treatment.
There are also efforts taken by the Government to fight against malaria. This is through the 2000 Abuja Declaration, in particular goal three which seeks to have good health and well-being with goal targets of ending malaria epidemic by the year 2030.
