Police in old Kampala have in custody a 36-year-old former UPDF soldier in a procession of counterfeit black United States (US) dollars.
The suspect is identified as Kenneth Nkurunugi, a resident of Rukungiri, Buyanjja Subcounty, Buyanjja town council.
According to the press release from the police on October 14, 2023, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that the suspect was a former UPDF soldier who had formally retired from Bombo’s headquarters in 2008 but was still working as a military trainer in Juba, South Sudan.
“The suspect had returned to Uganda for a vacation on August 19, 2023, with plans of returning to Juba on September 19, 2023, but extended his stay,” Owoyesigyire stated.
Owoyesigyire explained that the suspect claimed he had been contacted by a resident of Juba known as Musa Adam on October 12, 2023, to meet an unknown person in town who would provide him with the package to be transported to Juba through Classic Bus.
According to Owoyesigyire, the exchange occurred near Total Katwe, close to BMK House, where the suspect received the sealed box, proceeded to the bus terminal, where he handed it to the bus operator, and departed.
He said that the package was left behind, and the suspect was called back to retrieve it, which is how the police intervened, leading to Kenneth’s arrest.
Owoyesigyire stated that, upon investigation, it was confirmed that the box contained counterfeit black dollars with a total value of USD 40,000.
The police are actively investigating the case, and further details will be provided as investigations are ongoing.
