Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, Deputy President FDC and also Deputy President People’s Front for Transition (PFT), launched his party’s Presidential bid yesterday, July 17th, 2023, at Nsambya Sharing Hall, during a consultative meeting called and organised by Ssemujju Nganda (FDC spokesperson), which was snubbed by the Party President Patrick Amuriat Oboi and the Secretary General Nandala Mafabi.
According to Elias Lukwago, it is time for central Buganda to take up the leadership of the FDC since they have been faithful supporters of the party. Lukwago, who says he has not been in the party for long, but has held key roles, which he believes have placed him in a better position to lead the party.
“I am Deputy President FDC; I sit on the National Executive Council (NEC) and many other organs. I also deputise Dr. Kizza Besigye on the People’s Front for Transition (PFT), and in this light, I think I am well positioned to take up the Party Presidency and recapture Central Buganda from NUP for FDC. So I urge all party loving people to support me in this bid,” Lukwago said.
During the meeting, several FDC diehards spoke, including Ssemujju Nganda, Harold Kaija, Doreen Nanjura, and Wycliffe Bakandonda, one of the founding members of FDC, who spoke and echoed that FDC’s democracy was under threat due to the selfish nature of Nandala and Amuriat, who are working within the party to deliver the party to the ruling NRM government like Norbert Mao did with the Democratic Party (DP).
According to Ssemujju Nganda, in order for the spirit of FDC not to die, those who received suspicious money into the party that is meant to deliver FDC on a wheelbarrow to the state house by the likes of the Nandalas need to be stopped now.
“Me as Ssemujju, will not sit quietly for some money-hungry people to wheel me to State House; we cannot sit by and watch people mortgage FDC. I will speak and make noise by exposing those after FDC, and on this note, I will vie to stand behind Lukwago in his bid to unseat the moles,” Ssemujju said.
However, according to the FDC Chief Electoral Commission, Boniface Bamwenda, using its constitutionally given mandate under Article 29, revised the road map for elections, and they expect to carry out the National Delegates’ Conference to elect National Executive Committee members. They called upon all members to prepare and take up various leadership positions and not follow Lukwago and Ssemujju’s misguided intentions.
“The meeting organised by SSemujju was illegal, and accusing Amuriat and Nandala of wanting to sell the party is wrong, because FDC has structures that have to be followed. This meeting was carried out with the ill intention of launching their own political campaigns and sidelining the Party President and Secretary General.
