πΊπ¬Β Gen. Saleh Challenges Ugandan Universities on quality research
πGen Salim Saleh, the Operation Wealth Creation Coordinator has challenged Universities in Uganda to have documented research on matters relating to Uganda. Gen Saleh observed that foreign Universities have more data on Uganda compared to Ugandan Uiversities. He was Friday meeting Gulu University delegation led by Vice-Chancellor Professor George Openjuru Ladaah from Purongo in Nwoya District to who briefedΒ him on the status of the OWC Secretariat established at Gulu University in 2021.
βWe canβt have foreign universities having authority on our issues. For instance, I was shocked to get in-depth information from Tufts University in America about the Karamoja region, and I wondered where our universities were,”Β Gen Saleh said.
Prof. Openjuru said that Gulu University is committed to having more research towards community transformation and to act as a one-stop centre for documented research work in Northern Uganda.
πΊπ¬Β President Museveni gives hope to veterans, pledges construction of several roads in Greater Luweero
πPresident Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has dismissed claims that the Government has forgotten the people of Luweero and that the infrastructural development in Greater Luweero has lagged behind. The President, to that effect, pledged that Government will soon start on a number of road tarmacking works which will see several roads worked on. He also pledged that the veterans will receive their gratuity soon. On the issue of rampant land evictions, the President urged locals to use the Ministry of Lands to solve their land issues. The President made the remarks on Friday, in a speech read by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja who represented him during the commemoration of the Heroes Day at Kasaala Catholic Parish Grounds, Butuntumula sub county, Luweero District.
πΊπ¬Β Railway rehabilitation works to last 13 months
π The rehabilitation of the Kampala-Mukono railway line is progressing and the whole exercise will take 13 months. ThisΒ revelation was made by the Uganda Railways Corporation publicist, John Lennon Sengendo. Sengendo says the exercise for the removal of the old line has reached the Banda area towards Kireka. While touring the Kawolo concrete sleeper factory on Friday, Benon Kajuna, the Director of Transport at URC said that so far seven kilometers of track panels have been assembled and another 7,000 sleepers are ready for assembling into panels.

πThe Rwenzori West regional Police football tournamentβs second edition has commenced at St. Leoβs College Kyegobe, in Fort Portal City, with Ntoroko against Kyenjojo Police team. Eleven teams from different police divisions in nine districts of Rwenzori West RegionΒ competed in the second edition of the regional police football tournament which started on Saturday at Kabura play grounds in Fort Portal City. Norman Musinga, Rwenzori West Regional Police Commander says the annual tournament is a recreational activity between the police officers and the community.
πΊπ¬Β MITYANA: Police rescues six children from traffickers
π Police in Mityana District have arrested Mujabi Ssepuya Vincent, 43 and his wife, Nankanja Grace, 35 in connection to aggravated trafficking of children. The two were arrested in an operation following intelligence that there was a person trafficking children from Kampala in disguise that he was enrolling them in his school located at Bugabo cell, Kabuwambo parish, Tamu division. According to Rachel Kawala, the Wamala Region Police, the school has never been formally registered with the Ministry of Education and there was no learning activity taking place,Β but instead the children were subjected to laying bricks and looking after pigs belonging to SsepuyaΒ who is not a teacher by profession but a technician who repairs TVs, ACs, radios and other electronics.

πUganda Peopleβs Defence Forces Fisheries, Protection Unit has confiscated over 800 kgs of immature fish and illicit fishing gears worth Ugx1billion. The operation meant to curb down illegal fishing activities on Lake Albert was carried out at Kaiso and Kijangi landing sites in Hoima District.
πΊπ¬ KIRYANDONGO: 43 PDM SACCOs receive Shs2.4Bn
π 43 SACCOs registered in Kiryandongo District for the Parish Development Model (PDM) have received a total of Shs2.4 billion. Atwooki Issa, the Kiryandongo District production officer explained that Government has disbursed 42 of the 43 SACCOs with Shs57 million each, while Nanda SACCO received 32 million. The SACCOs anticipate receiving an additional $50 million by the end of June, while Nanda anticipates receiving $75 million. Hon Aliguma Edith, the District Chairperson appreciatesΒ Government’s effortsΒ to get people out of poverty. She warned beneficiaries to desist from wasting the money intended to help them come out of poverty.

π Kenya to raise over Ksh500Bn in nationwide road construction
πThe Kenya Roads Board plans to raise 512 billion shillings for the construction of 220,000 kilometers of roads in the country over the next five years.Β The project also intends to construct pedestrian walkways in all major cities so as to improve their safety. This was revealed by the road agencyβs Director General, Rashid Mohammed, during the official launch of the Kenya Roads Boardβs strategic plan for the years 2023 to 2027. Mohammed said that under the strategic plan, at least 84 percent of all roads in the country will be in good condition. Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, said that his ministry will develop smart road charges for electric vehicles as the Governemnt continues its push for electric mobility.

π President William Ruto has Saturday evening departed the country for a State visit to the Republic of Djibouti.Β During the State Visit, President Ruto will engage in bilateral talks with his Djibouti counterpart, President Ismail Omar Guelleh, aimed at strengthening and deepening the existing ties between the two nations.Β The discussions will cover various areas of mutual interest, including trade relations, collaboration in the field of green energy, as well as the pursuit of regional peace and security.Β On Monday June 12, 2023, President Ruto will participate in the 14th Ordinary Assembly of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government. The summit will deliberate on critical regional matters, with a particular focus on the situation in Sudan, as well as the overall state of peace and security in the region.
πΒ SOMALIA: Al Shabaab kills nine in hotel attack
π Six civilians have been killed and 10 injured after al-Shabab militants attacked a beachside hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, police say.Β Security forces rescued more than 80 guests from the Pearl Beach hotel after a six-hour siege on Friday night.Β Three members of the security forces died in the rescue operation and have been praised for their bravery.Β All of the attackers were killed in a fierce gun battle with security forces, police said.
π BURUNDI: Nearly 3M children to be immunized in mass Polio vaccination campaign
π Burundiβs health authorities on Saturday launched the countryβs first national Polio vaccination campaign since 2011, targeting nearly 3 million children under seven years of age. This followed 13 detections of variant poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). According to Dr Sylvie Nzeyimana, Burundiβs Minister of Health, the country has prepared more than 3.7 million doses of nOPV2 vaccine for administration over the next four days.Β Circulating poliovirus type 2 is the most prevalent form of Polio in Africa, accounting for most of outbreaks in the region, with more than 400 cases reported in 14 countries in 2022.
