πΊπ¬ President Museveni to address nation on Covid-19 next week
πPresident Yoweri Museveni will next week update the nation “on the steps going forward” on COVID-19 following a meeting he had with the COVID national task force on Friday. The team that met at State House Entebbe comprised of professional scientists fromΒ Government agenciesΒ including the Health Ministry, Office of the Prime Minister, Trade Ministry, Finance Ministry, and joint Security agencies.
“We discussed the Corona situation in the country and I will address the nation next week on what next,β President Museveni said in a tweet.

πPresident Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has cautioned Ugandans against politics of malice and hatred, saying it brings about divisionism thus threatening peace and development. The President was Friday speaking to the NRM leaders from Bukedea District at State House Entebbe. The leaders had met him to resolve the standoff on who should hold the party flag for the upcoming elections for Bukedea LC5 seat.
“I want to advise you political managers, be careful with your tongue if you want to unite the people. I don’t want that type of politics,” he said.

πPresident Yoweri Museveni has sent a condolence message to the Indian community in Uganda and the family of Mr. Uttah Bhandari who was shot dead by a Police Constable Ivan Wabwire. In a letter dated Saturday May 13, the President also directed the Security agencies to trace the motive of the irate police constable.

Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi has reassured security to the Indian business community living in Uganda.Β This follows a tragic incident in which Uttam Bhandari, an Indian national and the Director of TFS Financial Services at Rajja Chambers in Kampala, was shot and killed by an enraged Police Constable Ivan Wabwire FridayΒ May 12, 2023. He emphasized that the shooting was not a targeted crime, but rather an isolated incident. As a gesture of support, DIGP delivered Ugx5 Million contributed by Police towards the burial arrangements.

πThe National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Friday launched its initial accountability report on the progress so far made on their five-year manifesto. While speaking at the event held in Kampala, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said that their overall assessment of the implementation of the manifesto commitments indicates that Government has in the first two years accomplished 11% of the commitments and 77% of the commitments are on track to be achieved.
πΊπ¬ Police retrieves two bodies from River Rwizi after it burst its banks
πThe Police Marine unit in Mbarara has so far retrieved two bodies from River Rwizi after the river burst its banks. According to Samson Kasasira, the Police PRO Rwizi region says the team of divers has been able to retrieve two bodies of Timothy Kakuru and Amutuhaire Rukundo who were found in Karugangama and taken to Mbarara for postmortem. He added that another body of one called Rasta is still missing but the hunt is still on.
πΊπ¬ Devastating floods triggered by climate change – NEMA
πAccording to a statement released on Friday by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), multiple flooding incidents in Uganda are an indication of climate change.
“A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. For every degree of warming, the atmosphere holds around 7% more moisture. More moisture means that more rainfall comes in short, intense downpours, hence increasing the risk of flash flooding,” read part of the statement.

πFunding under the Emyooga wealth creation initiative has revived several businesses in Jinja City especially for dealers in agricultural produce at Bugembe Agaliawamu. The dealers are mainly women who are dealing in maize and cassava. Nabirye Eve, the representative of grain dealers emphasized that they have positively benefited from Emyooga and it had changed their household incomes.

πMaj Gen Don William Nabaasa has taken over office as the Third Infantry Division Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The predecessor, Brig. Gen. Joseph Balikuddembe handed over the office to Nabaasa in a ceremony presided over by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi at Moroto Army Barracks.
βNabaasa will add a positive effort in consolidating the gains attained in pacifying Karamoja sub-region”, Gen. Mbadi said.
πΊπ¬ KAWEMPE: Over 200 pregnant women get mosquito nets and mama kits
πOver 200 pregnant women from Mulago and Kalerwe in Kawempe Division have received mosquito nets to combat Malaria. The pregnant women also received mama kits to ensure safe delivery and mosquito repellant plants. The items were a donation from the Rotary Club of Makindye handed over by its President, Ms. Mable Abigaba and the Programme Manager of Malaria Partners Uganda, Mr. Abudallah Kayongo.

πTororo District has scheduled to commission 5 pit latrines and two classroom blocks constructed in schools and one pit latrine at Tororo West Division headquarters. In the letter dated May 11, addressed to the RDC and District Chairperson, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Gabriel Atama stated that the exercise will be conducted on Wednesday May 17 at the project sites. He further identified the beneficiaries as Tororo West Division, Kwapa Health Centre III and primary schools such as Kalit, Atiri, Walaweji, Miukwana as well as Morikiswa.

πPolice has started to hunt for goons who stoned and injured two Uganda People’s DΓ©fense Forces (UPDF) soldiers attached to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in Zombo Town Council. According to a Police report, the scuffle started during an operation to impound unregistered motorcycles that are common at the border towns. URAβs Northern Region Customs Manager, Sylvester Kiwanuka explained that the two soldiers were stoned by boda boda riders who were resisting and opposing the operation.

πMoroto Chief Magistrate Court has remanded a one, Beye Asuman, and Anna Sagal, both residents of Toyep toto village in Iriiri Sub County for alleged child trafficking. Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday after a tip-off from concerned residents.Β They were allegedly planning to transport four girls aged between 12 and 15 years old to Nairobi for casual labor. The girls were being kept inside the house of Beye. Denis Okori, the Napak Resident District Commissioner said they have been arrigned before the Moroto Chief Magistrate Emmy Sayekwo to answer charges of child trafficking and remanded to Moroto Prison until May 31.

πThe Sebei Elgon Cooperative Union limited (SECU) has held an extra general meeting at its offices to discuss alleged encroachment on the unionβs land that has caused financial losses of over Ugx40 million. The members accuse some Bukwo District officials of illegally allocating themselves parts of 1766 acre Kapyoyon farm located in Bukwo District. The chairperson SECU, Sayekwo Emma Geoffrey, said the meeting resolved to take legal action against the said encroachers if they fail to vacate the land.

πPresident Paul Kagame has visited Rubavu, in northwestern Rwanda, devastated by heavy rains and landslides, where he met families living in camps after they were left homeless. The region has been ravaged by floods and mudslides, claiming the lives of 131 people and displacing more than 9,000 since May 2. President Kagame accompanied by government officials visited various sites where temporary shelters have been put up. One of the camps is Rugerero, now home to more than 2,500 people, predominantly vulnerable women and children.

πTanzaniaβs former Foreign minister Bernard Kamilius Membe has died aged 69 at a hospital in Dar es Salaam where he had been rushed in the early hours of Friday. Membe had chest complications, although the cause of his death is still unclear. President Samia Suluhu Hassan praised Membe as a dedicated civil servant and diplomat in her condolence message.

πSudan’s warring military factions have signed a commitment to respect humanitarian principles in their spiralling conflict but they did not reach a ceasefire in talks described by US diplomats as difficult.
“We agree that the interests and well-being of the Sudanese people are our top priority and affirm our commitment to ensure that civilians are protected at all times,” said envoys of Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

πKenya, Somalia, Ethiopia have launched a project aiming to reopen the official border crossings among the three countries which have been partially or fully closed in recent years due to security issues. Speaking in the border town of Mandera during the launch, Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the project will improve socio-economic development between the three countries.
“Infrastructural development is silenced by armed conflicts, we must silence the gun for the industries to roar back, we must silence the violence for socio-economic prosperity,” Gachagua said.
