Democratic Party Wobbles Amidst Sectarian Squabbles

The Democratic Party once again became the joke of Ugandan politics after a meeting that was meant to pave a smooth path towards their forthcoming party delegates conference turned into a dirty fist fight between different Party leaders and rowdy youth known to be in support of rival party factions.

Many of the fights being witnessed in the Party are mainly due to the fact that the Party President, Nobert Mao is from the North and many in the party especially from Buganda have never come to peaceful terms with that fact. He is regarded as an outsider on that basis and many DP leaders even consider him a mole of the NRM party. This has prompted many of it’s leaders such as Sulaiman Kidandala and Mathias Mpuga to align themselves with a Pressure group, People Power ahead of the much anticipated 2021 general elections.

Even the one leader in DP who has remained on the side of Mao, Mukasa Mbidde has used the fact that he comes from Biganda to lobby for support for Mao and even reached the extent of threatening to run in Masaka Municipality as a way of dispelling the sectarian opposition to Mao’s leadership.

Others like Mukono Mp, Betty Nambooze and Kampala Mayor Elias Lukwago have threatened to split the party into two groups and getting absorbed by the Bobi Wine group.

This latest squabble is yet another nail in the coffin of the oldest party in Uganda, one that led the country to independence but has no slid to mere swan singing for a pressure group that has never participated in a national election all in the name of tribal and religious sectarianism.
