Criminal Charges Filed Against Suspected Attacker of Queen Elizabeth National Park Tourists

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Francis Abodo, has sanctioned two charges of terrorism, three charges of murder, three charges of aggravated robbery, and one charge of belonging to a terrorist organization against Kyoto Abdul Rashid alias Njovu, also known as Tembo, in respect of the attack at Queen Elizabeth National Park on October 17, 2023, killing one Ugandan and two British tourists.

During the attack, two motor vehicles were burnt, passports, money, and other personal belongings such as IDs and visa cards were taken by the suspect and his associates.

According to SCP Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, the prosecution-guided investigations were commenced by the offices of the DPP, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).

“Consequently, Kyoto Abdul Rashid was arrested in an operation by the UPDF marine forces on Lake Edward. Two of his associates were shot dead, and others managed to escape in a boat with their weapons, Enanga said.

“We would like to appreciate the security forces for apprehending the suspect and continue to make sure that the park is a safe place for all,” Enanga added.

Kyoto Abdul Rahid will be produced in Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court for the charges to be communicated to him.

Ugandan Alyai Eric, and two British nationals, Barlow David James and Geyer Emmarentia Cecilia, were shot dead before their vehicle was set on fire by the assailants while having a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese district in western Uganda.
