Police Arrests One, Recovers a Baby in Mityana

Police in Mityana District have arrested a suspected criminal over kidnapping a one-day baby from Mityana hospital Premises on 25th October 2022.

According to Racheal Kawala, the Region Police Spokesperson, the suspect is identified as Prossy Nakalanzi, a 40-year-old resident of Kasambya village in Kikandwa Sub-County, Mityana District.

Kawala said that Nakalanzi was arrested on October, 26th from a friend’s home identified as Costa Nanfuka a resident of Kyengeza village in Malangala Sub-County, Mityana District after being tracked down by Police and found with the baby.

Kawala confirmed that the suspect was arrested following a complaint raised by the baby’s mother, Aisha Namutebi aged 20, to hospital authorities. The hospital administration alerted Police and opened a case of aggravated child trafficking.

“The hospital administration alerted Police and reported a case of a stolen one-year-old baby after the baby’s mother raised a complaint of her missing child. Police immediately started investigations until Nakalanzi was found at her friend’s home identified as Costa Nanfuka with the baby. She was arrested and taken to Police while the baby was given back to the mother,” Kawala said.

According to preliminary findings by Police, Nakalanzi’s motive was to please her husband who was asking her to bear him a child.

The suspect is currently in Police custody as investigations are still ongoing, and charges of aggravated trafficking in children has been filed against her.
