The government has approved the proposal to vaccinate children against COVID19 virus.
This was approved on Monday during the Cabinet meeting held in Entebbe.
On Tuesday, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance while addressing the press at the Media Center said children between 12-17 years will be vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.
The cabinet decision stemmed from a proposal by the Ministry of health Okaying the vaccination of children against the virus.
According to Dr Baryomunsi, vaccination of children will only be with the approval of their parents.
Once conducted, Uganda will be the first East African country to vaccinate children against covid19 virus.
Minister also encouraged all Ugandans to get vaccinated and ensure strict adherence to standard operating procedures against the infection.
He also noted that a huge number of the population have not yet received their Covid19 second jab as a mandatory requirement by the government.
“When the drive to go for vaccination started, people responded by going for the first jab. A big number, however, has not gone for the second dose, and very few have gotten the booster shot. Our appeal to Ugandans out there is let us not behave as if COVID19 has gone away. It is still here with us.The answer to COVID19 is to observe SOPs, but most importantly, get vaccinated,” he said.
In Uganda, from 3 January 2020 to 5:40pm CEST, 20 June 2022, there have been 165,607 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 3,613 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 5 June 2022, a total of 21,268,120 vaccine doses have been administered.
