Teso leaders petition President Museveni over cattle compensation underpayment

Leaders from Teso have complained to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene on what they termed as inadequate payment in the ongoing livestock compensation in the region.

President Museveni launched compensation drive for claimants in Teso, Lango and Acholi sub regions during an event held in Soroti city a few months ago.

On Thursday, while meeting President Museveni in Kapchorwa district, the leaders complained about under value of their livestock by the Justice ministry.

“Imagine, our people are being paid as low as UGx70,000, while others are receiving Ugx 300,000 as compensation for their lost livestock?” the petition reads.

According to the petition, the leaders complained about lack of explanation from the Justice Ministry which is charged with the management of this exercise.

In Ngora district, it is said not even more than five people have received their inadequate payment.

“Mr. President, issues of compensation is very hot down there except that people just don’t want to tell you. Our people are being cheated and underpaid,” a member noted.

Teso leaders also asked President Museveni to consider allocating special scholarship at Soroti University to the region to accelerate level of education.

They further demanded for more budget allocation to Teso Affairs Ministry in the Office of the Prime Ministry to enhance effective service delivery.
