Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, the opposition leader of the National Unity Platform party, has in the strongest terms criticized Ugandan artists for accepting Ugx 30 billion from the government, saying they are just pawns for the ruling NRM government.

Bobi Wine made these remarks in his New Year message on January 2, 2025, at his home in Magere; he urged the artists to open their eyes and reject the money from the government.

According to Kyagulanyi, the artists under the leadership of Eddy Kenzo have become pawns for President Museveni and his NRM government to fight him.

“Artists should be a voice for the voiceless, not a tool for political manipulation. By accepting this money, they are compromising their values and the very essence of what it means to be an artist,” Bobi wine said.

However, Kenzo has also slammed Bobi Wine’s statements and referred to him as a selfish person who doesn’t want anyone to prosper; he urged that everyone has a right to get government support to boost their careers.

Kenzo added that receiving government support is not a crime and no artists should be made to believe so, as it is within the law that they have been given government support.

“Bobi Wine is just a selfish person; it is no secret that he also got help from the government during his music career. what is wrong with other artists getting a boost from the government?” Kenzo said.

Several artists have defended their decision, stating that the funds will help revive the struggling arts sector and provide opportunities for many who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They argue that the government’s support is essential for the survival of the industry.
