The Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC) will soon launch a new program to help more people access clean and affordable energy. This initiative aims to reduce energy costs for citizens across the country, especially in rural areas.
On December 2, 2024, Mr. Roy Nyamutale Baguma, the managing director of UECCC, announced that the official launch of the price subsidy program will take place on December 5, 2024, in Kiboga District. This program will offer significant discounts on various clean energy products to improve energy quality and accessibility in Uganda.
“We will promote this initiative nationwide to reach as many people as possible. To purchase the discounted products, individuals just need a National Identification Card, and they can take their chosen product home immediately,” said Baguma during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre.
The program is designed to make electricity more accessible, particularly in remote and rural areas. Under this initiative, prices for energy equipment used for tasks like water pumping, irrigation, refrigeration, and grain milling will be reduced by 60%.
Additionally, clean cooking solutions, which include solar, briquettes, ethanol, biogas, and liquefied petroleum gas, will see discounts ranging from 30% to 50% depending on the technology.
For those in need of portable lighting, solar lantern prices will also drop by 60%, and solar systems equipped with two lights will have a 50% discount.
To ensure the success of the program, UECCC has partnered with 67 Energy Service Companies (ESCOs). These companies will help provide the price discounts to the Ugandan public.
The Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company is responsible for implementing this initiative as part of the Electricity Access Scale-Up Project, which is funded by the World Bank and the Government of Uganda.
