The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a weather alert urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving during the rainy season.
The Traffic police spokesperson, Michael Kananura while speaking to the media on December 2, 2024, at the headquarters in Naguru said that the rainy season brings hazardous driving conditions, including fog, mist, heavy rainfall, flooded rains, and reduced visibility.
“To ensure safety on the roads, it is important for drivers to check vehicles, slow down, and increase visibility while driving,“ Kananura said.
He also cautioned motorists against driving through flooded areas as standing water can pose serious risks, as it appears deeper than it appears and causes vehicles to lose control.
Kananura also emphasized that fog and mist can significantly reduce road visibility, making it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles, traffic signs, and pedestrians.
Kananura further advised motorists to increase visibility, use headlights and ensure windshield wipers are in good condition and to reduce the risk of crashes by avoiding overtaking, especially in poor visibility conditions.
Police emphasize public vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines as crucial for preventing accidents during festival season and reduce the risk of crashes.
