Nathan Nandala Mafabi, a leader from the Forum for Democratic Change and a member of parliament for Budadiri County, has encouraged coffee farmers in the Bugishu region to support a new coffee bill. As the Chairperson of the Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU), he believes this bill can greatly benefit coffee farmers.
Mafabi explained that the bill includes important changes to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA). He said that if farmers support this bill, they will receive free coffee seedlings from the government, which is part of the Operation Wealth Creation program. This support will help farmers work hard and plan for a better future for their children.
“If you trust us to manage BCU, I urge you to support the coffee bill. It brings more benefits than before. We will get free seedlings, improve bean quality, increase yields, and raise prices. This will help everyone in our community,” he stated.
Mafabi emphasized that children in Bugishu deserve a bright future, which can be achieved by reducing poverty and growing more coffee. He urged farmers to work together and take advantage of the government’s support.
“Farmers, this is your chance to improve our communities. By backing the coffee bill, you contribute to a sustainable coffee industry that helps us now and in the future,” he added.
John Musila Bubulo, another member of parliament, mentioned that BCU has created a radio program to educate farmers about the coffee bill, ensuring everyone has access to this important information.
“BCU is owned by coffee farmers. This makes it easier for all farmers to understand the coffee bill and its importance,” said Musila.
Mafabi also encouraged farmers to advocate for a coffee processing plant in the region. Processing coffee can increase its market value, allowing farmers to earn more money from their crops instead of selling unprocessed beans, which are cheaper on the world market.
The Mount Elgon region, where many Arabica coffee farmers live, is one of Uganda’s main coffee-producing areas. By supporting the new coffee bill, farmers hope to improve their livelihoods and benefit from growing coffee.
