Paul Mwiru, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and former Member of Parliament, is currently in hiding following intense backlash from the Busoga community.
Mwiru is accused of grabbing Busoga Radio One, a station owned by the Kyabazinga, William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV.
The controversial takeover has sparked outrage among Kingdom officials and subjects who have demanded that Mwiru should urgently return the radio station to its rightful owners.
Mwiru’s elusive actions have raised eyebrows, with many questioning his motives.
According to a source within the Busoga Kingdom, despite several calls, Mwiru’s refusal to discuss the matter with the Kyabazinga has exposed hidden motives against the Kingdom and its cultural heritage.
“It is no secret that the radio station is owned by the Kyabazinga,” a Kingdom official stated.
A source revealed that the FM station in question is housed at Mugoya’s building on Kyasimira road, Nalufenya ward, southern division of Jinja city, and its mast is raised at the palace of Busoga kingdom. It was established to promote Busoga’s cultural values, tourism, and socio-economic development.
The controversy began when Mwiru, through dubious means, took control of the radio station without consulting the Kingdom.
Community leaders have criticized this move, calling it a blatant act of broad-day theft and disrespect toward the Kyabazinga and the people of Busoga.
Haji Ibra Ngobi, a former employee of Busoga Radio One, has accused Mwiru of using the station for political gain.
He confirmed that the majority of the staff of Busoga Radio One is affiliated with NUP, suggesting that the takeover is part of Mwiru’s strategy to push a negative political agenda ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections.
Ngobi said Mwiru has filled the station with his party members, many of whom have already declared their intentions to run for elective offices.
As calls to address the matter grow, many in the community are left wondering what Mwiru’s next move will be. Will he continue to defy the Kyabazinga, or will he choose to return the radio peacefully in a gesture of respect for the Kingdom?
