The Uganda and Belgium governments have reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations at a meeting held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Special Forces Headquarters in Entebbe.

According to Colonel Deo Akiiki, the UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, this followed the meeting between Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, with the Belgian Ambassador to Uganda, Hugues Chantry.

Col. Akiiki said the meeting primarily focused on pressing regional security issues, with Gen. Kainerugaba underscoring Uganda’s proactive role in peacekeeping efforts across the region.

Ambassador Chantry commended Uganda’s essential contributions to promoting stability and security, reinforcing Belgium’s support for ongoing regional integration initiatives.

“Uganda has been a cornerstone in fostering peace and stability in the region,” Ambassador Chantry stated.

He added that Belgium is committed to supporting these efforts and enhancing our collaborative initiatives.

Gen. Kainerugaba echoed these sentiments, expressing a strong commitment to furthering the fruitful cooperation established between the two nations.

“Joint efforts in tackling regional challenges, which are increasingly complex in today’s geopolitical landscape, are important,” Gen Kainerugaba said.

He added that the roots of cooperation between Belgium and Uganda date back to 1995, when the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed, laying the groundwork for a partnership that has continued to evolve over the years.

The leaders expressed optimism about the future of their collaboration, highlighting the mutual benefits that can arise from sustained dialogue and joint efforts in security and development.

As regional dynamics continue to shift, the reaffirmation of ties between Uganda and Belgium stands as a testament to their shared commitment to peace, stability, and collaboration in addressing common challenges.
