The Uganda Bureau of Statistics, UBOS, has concluded payment of allowance to a total of 114,327 enumerators who worked during the recent national population and housing census in the country.
Didacus Okoth, the UBOS spokesperson, said the payment made so far represents a total of 98%, amounting to the sum of Shs88.7 billion through the E-Cash platform.
Okoth disclosed this development on Thursday, August 7, 2024, during a press briefing concerning the post-enumeration process held at the Uganda Media Centre (UMC).
According to Okoth, only 1,519 enumerators have not been paid their allowances.
“There are three reasons for non-payment, including mismatch where the name of the beneficiary did not correspond with the name on the registered mobile number, loss of Census equipment (tablet, power bank with accessory), and the name not being submitted by the Accounting Officers,” Okoth said.
Okoth revealed that a total of 112,970 guides participated in the census enumeration, and a total of 109,730 (97.1%) have been paid, whereas 3,240 have not been paid yet, attributing it to a mismatch.
He further said that there were 14,643 enumeration supervisors, of which 13,272 have been paid and 1,371 are yet to be paid.
He said the Bureau deployed 122,026 tablets during Census enumeration, and so far, 121,197 (99.3%) tablets have been retrieved from the districts and cities, and 829 are yet to be recovered.
Okoth noted that the Bureau also deployed 119,418 power banks in various districts and cities, but only 107,685 (90.2%) power banks have been recovered and some 11,733 are yet to be retrieved.
The Bureau is currently processing and analysing raw Census data to the village level. All results will be disseminated at the end of September 2024.
He also said that the census was 99% supported by the Government of Uganda, with a total of UGX 328.74 billion received to undertake the exercise and UGX 18.5 billion (1%) from development partners.
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics conducted the National Population and Housing Census in May 2024, and the preliminary results indicate a total population of 45.9 million people.
