The NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has urged civil servants to avoid corruption and be firm on issues of accountability as they carry out their duties. Accountability enables the government to improve service delivery.

He made these remarks on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, while addressing members of the Town Clerk’s Association of Uganda (TCAU), which represents all town clerks in Uganda’s urban councils, at the launch of the five-year strategic plan 2024/28 at Kira Municipality Headquarters.

He warned technocrats against misusing government resources because it reflects poorly on the ruling NRM, and urged them to serve the people with dignity and diligence.

“Don’t even accept being arm-twisted by any rogue servants who may want to steal public resources.  You rather be hated for doing the right things in the interest of the population,” he said.

Todwong reassured association members of the government’s commitment to implementing the recently launched strategic plan.

“I have heard your concerns like the lack of offices for clerks in newly created councils and limited funding for some priority projects. I pledge to communicate to the concerned authorities through the right channels,” he added.

Additionally, he encouraged civil servants and political leaders to always maintain good working relationships, stating that fights cripple services for ordinary people.

“Learn to be tolerant to each other as leaders even amidst conflicts and provocations for the good of the common people,” he said

Bernard Yiga, the Kira Municipality Town Clerk and President of TCAU, urged the NRM to collaborate closely with civil servants for a better country.

Yiga stated that Uganda is home to us and future generations, so we must be honest and truthful in providing services.
