In a bid to harness bilateral relations between Uganda and Egypt, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakher, held talks on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, with the ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Monzer Selim, focusing on the expansion of cooperation across several fields of common interest within the framework of the Nile Basin Initiative.
In a meeting that took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Kampala, the two leaders underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration within the framework of the Nile Basin Initiative, with a focus on water resource management and utilization for the socio-economic development of both nations.
Odong expressed Uganda’s appreciation to the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt for their unwavering support and partnership and said he was looking forward to the continued collaboration and fruitful outcomes that will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Uganda and Egypt.
On his side, H.E Monzer Selim congratulated Uganda for the successful hosting of three significant summits, namely the IGAD, NAM, and G77, held consecutively in January 2024, adding that it underscores Uganda’s commitment to regional and international cooperation and its role as a beacon of stability and progress on the African continent.
He reiterated his country’s dedication to building on the existing foundation of friendship and cooperation to achieve tangible progress and prosperity, which will mutually benefit people in both countries.
He underscored the significance of sustainable water management for both nations and emphasized the need for concerted efforts to advance joint projects and initiatives under the Nilie Basin Initiative.
Launched in February 1999, the Nile Basin Initiative is a partnership among the Nile riverine states that seeks to develop the river in a cooperative manner, share substantial socioeconomic benefits, and promote regional peace and security.
