The former Woman MP for Kasese district and ex-Leader of Opposition, Hon. Winnie Kiiza, has called upon opposition Members of Parliament to collaborate closely with the government and their colleagues from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Speaking at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on February 23rd, 2024, during a meeting organized by the office of the Leader of Opposition, Kiiza emphasized the importance of cooperation in achieving effective leadership. The meeting aimed to highlight key priority areas for the opposition.

“To be an effective leader, you need to work closely with the government and all members across the board,” asserted Kiiza.

During her address, Kiiza urged opposition MPs to be intentional in their efforts and cooperate with NRM MPs if necessary. She emphasized the necessity of lobbying NRM counterparts to champion the opposition’s issues on the floor of parliament, particularly if they have a higher chance of being granted the opportunity to speak and garner support from the majority.

“It costs you nothing to lobby an NRM MP to present your issue on the floor of parliament. After all, the goal is to have your issue heard and addressed,” Kiiza added.

She went on to encourage shadow cabinet ministers, who were recently sworn in, not only to focus on their constituency concerns but also to direct their attention toward national issues that often transcend regional boundaries.

The meeting, orchestrated by the parliament of Uganda under the purview of the Leader of Opposition’s office, attracted a multitude of MPs from various opposition political parties, civil society representatives, journalists, and parliamentary staff members. The diverse attendance demonstrated the shared enthusiasm for effective governance and the determination to address national challenges in a cooperative manner.
