As the holiday season approaches, authorities are sounding the alarm on a concerning trend: a spate of cattle thefts across the country. Detailing recent incidents in an official statement released November 21, 2023, Uganda Police’s Chief Political Commissar, ASP Hadija Namutebi, highlighted multiple occurrences in different regions.
In Tororo, three separate thefts occurred, but prompt action led to the recovery of the stolen animals and the arrest of four suspects. ASP Namutebi commended the collaborative efforts of the cattle owners and community members, emphasizing their crucial role in the successful recovery of the animals.
“These incidents occurred in Amagoro2, Amagoro Ward, Eastern Division, Tororo Municipality, Tororo District, on November 13, 2023.and the animals belonging to Issa Karim of the Amagoro A cell in Amagoro Ward, Eastern Division, Tororo municipality were recovered on November 14, 2023 from Morukatioe S/c in Tororo District,” stated Namutebi.
In Gomba, unknown individuals pilfered 10 cattle, prompting a canine-assisted operation that resulted in the arrest of three suspects. Meanwhile, in Kyegegwa, thieves attempted to sell off 29 stolen cattle, but swift police action led to the recovery of the animals and the capture of two suspects.
Another incident unfolded in Buhweju, where community vigilance played a pivotal role. Prompt reporting and cooperation with law enforcement resulted in the recovery of two missing cows and the arrest of a suspect.
The police have highlighted the importance of community vigilance and applauded the joint efforts of citizens and security teams, particularly acknowledging the indispensable role played by the canine unit in tracking down the stolen animals. As the festive season approaches, authorities are urging heightened vigilance to curb the growing trend of cattle theft.
