The Judiciary has dismissed reports on social media indicating that Irene Nyafwono Laker, an advocate who practices law in Uganda, was appointed as a judicial officer.

According to a statement by the Judiciary Public Relations Officer, Ereemye James JM, dated October 31, 2023, Nyafwono, who was suspended by the law council over professional misconduct, has never been appointed.

“The attention of the Judiciary has been drawn to social media reports indicating that Ms. Irene Nyafwono Laker, an advocate who was recently suspended by the Law Council over professional misconduct, is a judicial officer. We wish to clarify that Ms. Nyafwono has never been appointed a judicial officer,” the statement read in part.

The statement further revealed that Nyafwono is rather an enrolled advocate subject to the disciplinary mechanisms of the Law Council and not the Judicial Service Commission.

“As a result, her suspension resulted from the disciplinary proceedings of the Law Council,” Ereemye stated.

The Judiciary has said that, therefore, any reports associating Ms. Nyafwono with the Judiciary Service should be ignored.

Advocate Irene Nyafwono Laker, as of October 2023, lost her licence to practice law in Uganda and is under suspension according to the order of the Ombudsman’s Disciplinary Committee.

However, the judiciary did not provide the exact details of her suspension.
