Martha Wangari Karua is a prominent Kenyan politician known for her unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and good governance. As a fearless critic of corruption and abuse of power, she gained a reputation as the “Iron Lady” of Kenyan politics.

Born on September 22, 1957, in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, Karua has emerged as a symbol of resilience and integrity within the country’s political landscape throughout her career. Martha Karua has been an advocate for social justice and the promotion of women’s rights.

Her journey in politics began in the 1990s, when she joined the newly formed Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD), a movement that sought to bring multi-party democracy to Kenya. She quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the key figures in the struggle against the ruling party’s autocratic rule.

Karua played a pivotal role in the constitutional reform process that led to the establishment of a multiparty system in Kenya in 1992. She firmly believed that democracy and good governance were fundamental for the development and progress of the country.

In 1997, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Gichugu Constituency, a position she held for four consecutive terms. During her time in parliament, she championed various legislative initiatives aimed at advancing women’s rights, fighting corruption, and strengthening the rule of law.

She served as the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation from 2003 to 2008, where she spearheaded reforms in the water sector to ensure equitable access to clean and safe water for all Kenyans.

One of the defining moments in Karua’s career was her role as a key protagonist in the 2007 general elections. As the presidential candidate for the National Rainbow Coalition-Kenya, she fiercely campaigned against incumbent President Mwai Kibaki. Despite the controversial outcome of the elections, which was marred by allegations of rigging and violence, Karua maintained her unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law. She challenged the results in court, marking a significant turning point in Kenya’s political history.

Karua’s dedication to justice and accountability led her to testify at the International Criminal Court (ICC) against prominent politicians accused of perpetrating violence during the 2007 post-election crisis. Her testimony played a crucial role in ensuring that those responsible for the violence were held accountable.

Today, Martha Karua continues to be an influential voice in Kenyan politics. As the leader of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) Kenya party, she remains committed to fighting for justice, transparency, and good governance. Her resilience, fearlessness, and unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy make her a force to be reckoned with within Kenya’s political landscape.

Martha Karua’s legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for her unwavering dedication to justice, her fight against corruption, and her commitment to empowering women in a male-dominated political arena. Her influence and impact will continue to shape the course of Kenyan politics and inspire future generations of leaders.
