In a bid to tackle trade challenges and strengthen bilateral relations, Uganda and Zambia are exploring military cooperation. Maj Gen. Jack Bakasumba, the Chief of Staff Land Force, emphasized the significance of integration within the East African Community and highlighted the potential of bilateral agreements to address the current trade issues between the two countries.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Zambia Defence Services Command and Staff College, Maj. Gen Bakasumba expressed the importance of robust regional security mechanisms in fostering partnerships between neighboring militaries.

The Zambian delegation was visiting Uganda on a study tour aimed at enhancing their understanding of geopolitics, social dynamics, and economic factors impacting the region.

Maj. Gen Bakasumba acknowledged the Zambian delegation’s support for strengthening friendly relations and emphasized the importance of the bilateral Defence Cooperation agreement. This agreement serves as a legal framework that obliges both countries to collaborate and jointly address shared strategic security concerns.

Col. Nelson Aheebwa, representing the Chief Political Commissar, delivered a security briefing on “Geo-Political Aspects and the Imperative of Regional Integration.” He emphasized the need for integration to strengthen regional security frameworks, establish a larger market, and provide a stronger foundation for mutual security.

Col. Pezu Lamba, leading the Zambian delegation, expressed gratitude to the UPDF (Uganda People’s Defence Forces) leadership for hosting them and commended the UPDF for their diligent efforts in countering terrorist threats within the region. Such interactions serve to deepen the bilateral ties between the Zambia Defence Forces and Uganda.

The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials, including Brig Gen James Kinalwa, Chief of Personnel and Administration, Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Deputy Chief of Logistics, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, Defence Spokesperson, and other senior UPDF officers.

The pursuit of military cooperation between Uganda and Zambia demonstrates their commitment to addressing trade challenges and enhancing security in the region.
