The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has closed six radio stations for non-compliance with the law, which found the owners guilty of operating without a broadcasting licence.

This was confirmed by a notice dated October 2, 2023, issued by UCC to the radio owners.

According to the UCC, the Notice of Closure has been issued to the owners and management of the radio stations as a reminder of their repeated failure to obtain valid broadcasting licences from the commission.

“Radio Divine 90.6 in Apac District operating under Divine Partners Limited, Hot FM 101.6 in Amolatar under Hot FM Limited, and Kisoro FM 91.1 in Kisoro District operated by Mgahinga Investments Limited have been closed,” UCC said.

“Additionally, 102.2 FM Iraka Ryentunguka, managed by Millennium Voice Radio located in Ruhira Isingiro District, Peace FM 93.7 FM under Salt & Light Christian Church located in Kitgum, and Clouds 98.5 FM in Fort Portal, operating under Welsto Company Limited, have been closed as well,” UCC added.

UCC developed the Uganda Communications Act 2013 as a regulator for developing a modern communications sector, and according to Section 26(1) of the Act, a person shall not install or operate a radio station or any related broadcasting apparatus without a licence issued by the Commission. Section 27(1) of the Act also requires that a person not broadcast without a broadcasting licence issued by the Commission.
