Team Uganda is advocating for the right to education at the Street Child Cricket World Cup (SCCWC) in Chennai, India, as it has been documented that most children in Uganda face challenges in attaining mainstream education.
The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) and Youth Sport Uganda (YSU) have partnered to take Team Uganda to the SCCWC in Chennai between September 22 and October 1, 2023, to compete in the tournament.
According to UCA, the Street Child World Cup, an International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup side event, is an initiative of Street Child United and will be delivered in partnership with the Shree Daya Foundation.
The event will bring together street-connected youth from all over the world to participate in a cricket tournament, an arts festival, and a Congress and General Assembly that will focus on the rights and protection of children.
Following the first edition’s success in Cambridge in 2019, this year’s will be the second.
The SCCWC 2023 will give the most vulnerable children across the globe the chance to represent their countries and tell the world, “I am somebody.”
YSU, a sport for development organisation, works with refugee and host community youth in the disadvantaged communities of Uganda and uses sport as a vehicle for change.
A team of eight people, aged 15 to 18, from disadvantaged backgrounds, represents Uganda (4 boys and 4 girls).
The inaugural event was in London/Cambridge in 2019, where eight teams competed, and Team India South emerged victorious after beating the hosts England in a highly competitive final.
