President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has asked that the digital vehicle number plate initiative go as scheduled, citing its importance in combating crime in Uganda.

The president made these remarks while passing out 2234 prison service officers at Kololo independence grounds on September 10, 2023.

President Museveni emphasized that digital number plates would significantly impede criminal activities, as vehicles and boda bodas are frequently utilized by individuals involved in unlawful acts. Closing the gap in crime prevention through the use of digital number plates would make it considerably more challenging for criminals to operate, as their easy movement to and from crime scenes would be hindered.

“Now, I’m insisting on the issue of electronic number plates; it will be a very big blow to crime because most people move to and from the scene of crime by either a vehicle or a boda boda,” Museveni explained.

The President called for an end to ongoing debates surrounding this matter, emphasizing the urgency of implementing the project to resolve the issue effectively.

Furthermore, President Museveni highlighted the importance of ensuring the fingerprinting of CCTV cameras and firearms, particularly those belonging to security forces such as the Uganda Defence Force (UPDF).

He directed that all firearms, including those within the military, should be fingerprinted in order to enhance crime-fighting capabilities. While acknowledging the need to maintain separate storage for such firearms, the President stressed the necessity of fingerprinting each and every weapon.
