The government, in partnership with School Pay, an app that helps in paying school fees, has urged all teaching institutions to align with the Education Digital Agenda strategy to comprehensively adopt digital payment systems for schools.

The Assistant Commissioner in Charge of Private Education Institutions, George Muteekanga, urged them while presiding over the school-paid digital financial literacy training for teachers held in Kampala.

According to Mutekanga, policies and initiatives have been put in place to facilitate the implementation of digital technology in schools to improve the quality of education.

He added that schools and other educational institutions must embrace digital technologies and payment methods to keep up with current payment technology trends and promote the country’s education digital agenda strategy in 2021–2025.

“As government, we need to suggest and support the digital agenda, but we also need to put in place the infrastructure, put in place the internet connections, and have service providers work in the different banks in Uganda,” Muteekanga said.

Muteekanga calls upon the Banking Association to work with the government and agree on a strategy and how best they can implement it.

The Commissioner applauded School Pay for supporting the government’s digital agenda by providing teachers with relevant training skills to effectively deal with emerging technologies.

School Pay is a new mobile solution that helps parents in Uganda overcome barriers by allowing them to pay for school-related expenses securely with their phones at anytime of the day, which saves them from transport fares and the inconvenience of being in a line at the bank.

Teachers appreciated School Pay for making school payment life very easy for them; however, they asked for more training because some people are not conversant with the app.
