A Description of the Special Features and Symbols on Ugandan Banknotes

It is no news that Uganda is a deeply rooted country in culture and nature. This is also depicted on Ugandan bank notes. The notes feature landmarks, wildlife, and cultural symbols of Uganda, such as the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, the Crested Crane, and a traditional drum. These symbols are a proud reminder of Uganda’s unique culture and heritage.

Here are some of the features on each note;

50,000

50,000 shilling note: The golden colored note shows mountain gorillas, the Stride Monument in Kampala, over a background of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. According to the International Bank Note Society, Shs50,000 is one of the most strikingly beautiful currencies in the world.

20,000 shilling note; This depicts a cow, traditional drums, the Centenary Monument located at Centenary Park in Kampala, over a background of Lake Nyinambuga, a crater lake in Western Uganda.

10,000 shilling note; This note portrays a banana plantation and the Statue of Education found in Kyambogo University in Kampala, over a background of the Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District.

5,000 shilling note, green in color illustrates the World War II Memorial Monument in Kampala, over a background of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

2000 shilling note; the blue coloured note shows the Nile river, and the Source of the Nile Monument in Njeru.

And finally, the 1,000 shilling note depicts the Uganda kob, features of Nyero rock paintings found in Kumi, while the reverse side depicts the National Independence Monument in Kampala.

All the banknotes have the coat of arms, a map of Uganda with the equator crossing, and a crested crane.
