Parliament should reconsider death penalty – Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to Parliament to look into the reinstatement of the death penalty as means of dealing with convicted murderers.

The President made this appeal while paying last respects to the late Dr Agaba Catherine of IHK who was last week found dead after being murdered by a watchman at her residence and later dumped in a septic tank.

According to Museveni, whereas scrapping the punishment for these capital crimes was one of the first items on the agenda when NRM took power in 1986, things have since changed with criminals taking advantage of the lax nature of our civilian laws.

The President also lamented that such criminals didn’t deserve the luxury and comfort of a state prison at the tax payers’ expense.

The President also took the opportunity to thank security agencies that worked tirelessly to bring the culprit to book, who had managed to escape to his village with property he had stolen from the deceased.

The President also thanked the efforts of the deceased, Mr Rutagumbwa to raise and educate his children to take on successful careers.

The call from the President for the country to take on more strict forms of punishment is commendable and should improve the other efforts to fight violent crimes like murder and kidnaps that had gripped the nation and we hope that Parliament gets the opportunity to debate on the matter.
