During the long-week operation in Karamoja sub-region, the joint security forces recovered 1,121 cattle. Following several tracking operations and sometimes face-offs with the raiders, the animals were recovered from various parts of Karamoja.

According to Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, 1,121 cows were recovered from 1,208 raids between April 16th and April 23rd, 2023.

“The security operations led to the recovery of 1,121 cows out of 1,208 that were raided between April 16th and April 23rd, 2023. In addition, the security forces have recovered all 34 goats and sheep that were stolen, confiscated four guns, and arrested 83 suspected cattle rustlers,” Longole said.

Longole explained that cattle owners who accompanied security officers during the operations were able to identify their animals, which were then returned to them. When identification was uncertain, animals were taken to the holding grounds spread throughout the region.

In Moroto district, officers manning the Nadunget checkpoint intercepted three trucks loaded with cows believed to have been stolen, Longole added.

Longole also confirmed that suspected Jie warriors from Kotido had been committing arson and attacks using bows and arrows. Consequently, four civilians were killed and five others were injured and are receiving medical care in various health facilities, particularly in Abim district.

Approximately 35,724 livestock have been recovered since July 2021, and 817 illegal guns have been seized from Karamojong warriors.
