Police in Kampala have arrested a man suspected of vandalizing streetlights across the city. The suspect, identified as Ismah Mugisha was apprehended on Tuesday, April 11 and is currently being detained at Central Police Station.

According to Simon Kasyate, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) spokesperson, Mugisha’s arrest was made possible by the swift actions of city dwellers who noticed the suspect digging up electric cables near Nakawa railway crossing point and alerted police.

“We applaud the actions of the vigilant city dwellers who helped in the apprehension of the suspect. We call upon all citizens to take action and help us protect public infrastructure, including street lights, which are crucial in ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the city,” Kasyate said.

“He (Mugisha) is expected to face theft and malicious damage to government property charges,” he continued.

Furthermore, Kasyate assured city residents that the KCCA will collaborate with police to hold those responsible for vandalism of public infrastructure accountable.

According to KCCA, Kampala has over 7,000 streetlights installed throughout the city, and recent streetlight vandalism has left many areas of the city dark and dangerous for city dwellers who must navigate the streets at night.

Citizens are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may threaten public infrastructure. It is a call to action for all citizens to take part in ensuring the safety and security of the cities.
