The security authorities in Luwero District have temporarily shut down the operations of two mosques in Bombo Town Council following a series of fierce clashes between warring factions.

The affected mosques are Masjid Kabir and Masjid Khamis Shafie.

The closure of these mosques was confirmed by the Khadhi of Luwero District under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), Sheikh Ramadhan Mulindwa Nsanja.

According to Sheikh Mulindwa, the development arose from protests staged by the Muslim faction protesting the results of the recent national Muslim elections.

Mulindwa said the faction had also planned to interrupt the swearing-in ceremonies of those who had won the polls.

Sheikh Mulindwa noted that despite the protest, the new leaders were sworn into office.

He adds that the decision to shut down the operations of two mosques was made by the district security committee to curtail the escalating security threats caused by the faction.

“Elected leaders of Masjid Kabir (Masjid Noor Bombo) and Masjid Khamis Shafie have been sworn in, and the two mosques are temporarily closed for security reasons,” Sheikh Mulindwa stated.
