The acting in-charge of the maternity ward at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from mothers seeking services at the facility.

The suspect identified as Jane Angudeyo, was picked up by the State House Anti-Corruption Monitoring Unit from the hospital yesterday December 13th at the directive of the State minister for State Economy Monitoring, Beatrice Akello Akori.

Akello who was conducting the monitoring services at the facility to ascertain the service delivery and status of the hospital stated that the arrest followed complaints from mothers accusing Angudeyo and other staff of demanding money before offering them services.

“We were informed by the principal administrator that the supplies (gloves, Omo , Jik among others) brought here on 26th November are still in stock but the expecting mothers were asked to provide them before they were attended to,” Akello stated.

“We are ordering for your arrest because of your failure to work, negligence of duty and directing the staff to ask for money from patients,” Akello said to Angudeyo.

Angudeyo was led by plain-clothed police officers to Gulu Central Police Station to record a statement.
