The leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, has advised his supporters, especially those in the diaspora, to limit their expectations from the current American regime in their political struggle back in Uganda.
“I appeal to all our comrades in the struggle, especially those in the different corners of the globe, to limit their expectations from the current regime in America. We feel betrayed by the people we thought were advocating for democracy and human rights in the world over…” Bobi Wine said.
Kyagulanyi made these comments on Sunday, December 11th, 2022, while in Prague, Czech Republic, at the Aspen Institute’s Ministers’ Forum, where he met Hillary Clinton, the two-time US presidential hopeful.
His comments follow President Museveni’s departure to the United States of America on the invitation of President Joe Biden to attend the 3-day US-Africa Leaders’ Summit that opened on Tuesday, December 13th, 2022, in Washington, DC.
However, Museveni’s invitation to the US to attend the summit is to the detriment of several opposition activists, especially the National Unity Platform party supporters in the diaspora, who have termed it a betrayal from the Biden administration.
Bobi Wine’s supporters in America, led by Robert Menedez, the Chairperson of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, had earlier petitioned the Biden government not to invite President Museveni for the summit.
The Federal Prosecutions Service is also investigating Senator Menedez and his wife Nadine Arslanian back home for allegedly engaging in partisan activism in other sovereign states as well as sanctioning a conspiracy with Bobi Wine against Museveni.
To their disappointment, Biden’s administration snubbed their request, saying Uganda, under President Museveni’s leadership, is a strategic security ally within the Great Lakes region, and therefore he (President Museveni) cannot be sidelined.
On the sidelines of the US-Africa summit, President Museveni is expected to meet with US President Joe Biden and discuss the different areas of common interest, especially peace and security, as well as foster Uganda’s economic ties with the US.
