Why is the International Legal Framework Silent as Bobi Wine and NUP Incite Genocide?

In a social media trending video, the National Unity platform party member and Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Geofrey Ongima aka High Tower is seen inciting violence and genocide in the presence of Bobi Wine and other party members at their Party headquarters in Kavule as they held a press conference, March 17,2023.

High Tower who has been in and out of prison for causing violence in Kampala is seen sending intimidating and threatening messages to the president and security organs, promising to attack State House as well as killing children of security officers.

“CMI,Uganda police,JAT,CI,You have families and we know where your children go to school, just know you are surrounded, ” High Tower said.

Surprisngly,Bobi Wine is seen clapping for the same utterances instead of coming out to condemn them.On several occasions,Bobi Wine himself has been inciting violence and genocide against non Baganda and has walked away with his hate speeches.

Incitement to genocide is a crime under the international law and the offence is subject to prosecution even if the genocide does not occur. Where is the International legal framework as Bobi Wine continues to promote hate speech and genocidal statements against non-Baganda?

In early 90s,the hate speech in Rwanda led to the genocide in  which a million Hutus and Tutsis lost their lives.

Bobi Wine and team should understand that they have no monopoly over what they’re preaching. The NRM government and president Museveni have over the years fought hard to create a country free of tribalism and violence and without doubt Bobi Wine and team will not succeed in promoting the same.

The silence of the international legal bodies as Bobi Wine tries to plunge the country into anarchy is worrying. The international criminal court,a treaty based criminal court is established to prosecute genocide under article 6 of the statute, crimes against humanity and war crimes including incitement to genocide.

Severally,Bobi Wine and team have tried to incite an insurrection, urging their supporters to use violent means to remove a legitimately elected government, whereas they have not succeeded, it is not in order for the government to keep silent in a country where democratic principles are considered in high regard.

In September 2023,Bobi Wine’s tribal remarks and hate speeches while in Luwero for his countrywide tours sparked debate in the country. He rallied Baganda against other tribes

Ugandans of good will should come out to condemn such undemocratic behaviors propagated by these power hungry gangs who want to overthrow the constitution. As we approach the national elections in 2026,Ugandans should give a vote of no confidence to these selfish opposition politicians who do not value people’s lives.

What exactly is the importance of the international criminal court or the regional legal bodies if they can’t handle such ruthless opposition leaders in the interest of citizens? Ugandans deserve leaders who have people’s interests at heart and definitely Bobi Wine and NUP have portrayed themselves to be far from leadership, their selfish interests are being closely watched by Ugandans.
