In 1984, at the height of the NRA bush war, Archbishop of Canterbury during a Church Service in England commented on the state of life in Uganda saying that, “Of all places in the world that should see the suffering, Uganda should be the last”.
This came after journalists covering the political situation in the country unveiled mass starvation and death at the hands soldiers belonging to the Obotte 2 army. This was all happening inspire an annual injection of over 300 million USD per year from the world bank to support development efforts especially in Buganda region that faced the wrath of the tyranny that turned former Aristocrats into paupers.
Joel Senyonyi
Joel is a 30 something self proclaimed virgin and recently appointed People Power Spokesman. He is a Muganda by tribe and a former presenter on NTV Uganda. He hails from the Luwero region of Uganda, the one that suffered the worst of the Obotte regime. It is safe to say, he is even lucky to be alive and kicking today considering the scale of death especially children during the period he was born.
General Elly Tumwine is a bush war veteran and current Minister for security. He hails from Kashari in western Uganda and like many young men of his time, were massively oppressed by the regime of Obotte 2 and as such the decision to rise up against the oppressor was more natural and instinctive more than any thing else.
From August House to Kernel
When a young man describes a house of democratically elected individuals as dogs, tongues have to wag. What does it say about the people who sent dogs to the August house? What does it say of his boss, who is one of the most recent additions to the house? What has happened to our morals and what kind of leaders are we grooming? Those with no respect for elders. How will they respect basic human rights then?
These young, power hungry individuals have become dismissive of our history and the journey we have had to take to achieve the free speech that describes legislators as dogs. Our constitution protects him too. So why would he be dismissive of the thousands of men, women and children who lost their lives so that he could call leaders dogs?
So if we may ask again, who sent you to the bush? Patriotism cannot be taught. It is a calling to sacrifice one’s self for the love of the country to give to the oppressed. You may call them dogs, but when their country needed them, they stood by it and gave their all for our good.
