The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed regret over the United States of America’s announcement to withdraw from the global health body.
In a statement released on January 21 2025 the Organisation emphasized its critical role in safeguarding global health, including that of Americans, by addressing health emergencies and strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.
The statement highlighted the USA as a founding member since 1948, noting its significant history in shaping the organisation’s work.
“The partnership has led to numerous joint achievements, including the eradication of smallpox and notable progress in polio eradication,” the statement read in part.
The organisation underscored its crucial role in tackling global health challenges, particularly during disease outbreaks, often in perilous environments.
“The WHO is dedicated to strengthening health systems and addressing the root causes of diseases to enhance overall public health,” the statement read in part.
WHO acknowledged the substantial reforms undertaken in the past seven years, aimed at enhancing accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in various countries. These reforms are designed to improve the organisation’s response to health crises and better serve its member states.
In its statement, WHO expressed hope that the United States would reconsider its decision. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, emphasising the need to maintain the vital partnership for the benefit of global health.
According to WHO it is dedicated to global health and its aspiration for continued collaboration with the United States.
