The Uganda Prisons Authority has clarified that visiting inmates detained in any prison in Uganda is free of charge.

This stemmed from the receipt circulating on social media suggesting that access to people visiting inmates in Luzira Maximum Security Prison can only be granted after payment of Shs50,000.

Frank Baine, the Spokesperson for Uganda Prison Service, said on Monday, July 29th, that visiting any prison facility in Uganda is completely free without any cost.

He urged the public to disregard the misleading information that has recently circulated.
According to Baine, the received money was for the inmate’s personal use.

Baine emphasized the importance of accurate communication and encouraged the public to engage with the prison service without fear of incurring costs for visits.

“This is evidence that a person has paid money for the inmate’s support, and the officer in charge has received it because some people would allege that they paid the money without any proof that they had paid,” said Baine.

This statement comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve public relations and transparency within the Uganda Prisons System.
