The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has temporarily suspended passenger train services (PTS) along the Kampala-Namanve route to pave the way for the construction works along the Kinawattaka water drainage channel areas.
John Ssengendo, the URC communication officer, said on Sunday, 22 September 2024, the Passenger Train Services (PTS) will be suspended starting Monday, 23 September 2024.
He explained that repairs will take approximately three weeks to construct a drainage channel that will facilitate proper water flow and prevent debris buildup on the railway line embankment.
“Around the Katogo-Kinawattaka area, there is a stream that brings a significant amount of water and debris, adding excess weight to the railway line,” Ssengendo said.
According to him, they have decided to build a drainage channel on both sides of the road and the stream to reduce water force and minimize potential damage to the embankment supporting the railway.
He says the passenger train services are expected to resume in three weeks.
Before suspending the services, URC was operating a total of four trips a day commuting between Kampala and Nammanve.
