The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) proudly graduated a total of 637 Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and hailed them as the backbone of the military after successfully completing four months of rigorous training at the Gaddafi Military Barracks in Jinja.
The training encompassed various courses, including the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ Course (SNCO), the Instructors’ Course, and the Junior Non-Commissioned Officers’ Course (JNCO).
Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of Land Forces, officiated the graduation ceremony on December 20, 2024, and commended the graduates for their hard work and dedication.
He emphasized the critical role that NCOs play within the military, saying, “The NCO’s core is the foundation of any force. The UPDF is focused on building a professional, well-trained force as an investment in human capital that will maintain the good shape of the force.”
In his address, Maj Gen Takirwa encouraged the graduates to exemplify discipline, patience, and commitment in their duties.
“Embrace responsibility and sacrifice while applying your newly acquired skills in your respective units while fostering a spirit of teamwork,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of avoiding favoritism in assignments and maintaining a strong national character, which is essential for the UPDF’s success.
Additionally, he stressed the necessity of good health and financial discipline, urging soldiers to remain dedicated to the values that contribute to national development.
On behalf of the Joint Staff Training and Doctrine (TRADOC), Colonel Stephen Mulindwa assured attendees that the UPDF is committed to continually enhancing its training programs to ensure a professional and capable force ready to tackle future challenges.
Col Michael Ssesanga, the Commandant of the NCOA, praised the NCOs for their dedication, confirming that the course objectives were fully met.
“You have been prepared into competent leaders who must serve with dedication and passion because the UPDF has hope in you,” Col Ssesanga remarked.
The ceremony also recognized outstanding performers among the graduates: Sgt Noble Charles Otwa was honored as the best overall student in the SNCO course.
Whereas Hilder Pte Ambeja excelled in the Instructors Course, Felix Pte Munguja emerged as the top performer in the JNCO course.
The graduation ceremony was graced by several senior officers, including Brig Gen Chris Ogwal, the Commandant of the Junior Staff College; Col Saad Katemba, the Director of Training for Land Force; Col Katongole, the Commandant of SOST; and Col James Rukundo, the Third Division Training and Operations Officer.
